Marks Percentage Calculation FAQs
To calculate the percentage of marks, use this formula:
Percentage = (Marks Obtained / Total Marks) × 100
For example, if you scored 85 out of 100 marks:
Percentage = (85 / 100) × 100 = 85%
To calculate the overall percentage for multiple subjects:
- Add up all marks obtained in all subjects
- Add up the total marks for all subjects
- Use the formula: Percentage = (Total Marks Obtained / Total Maximum Marks) × 100
For example, if you scored 85/100, 90/100, and 78/100 in three subjects:
Total marks obtained = 85 + 90 + 78 = 253
Total maximum marks = 100 + 100 + 100 = 300
Percentage = (253 / 300) × 100 = 84.33%
To convert CGPA to percentage, multiply your CGPA by the appropriate conversion factor:
- For 4.0 scale: Percentage = CGPA × 25
- For 10.0 scale: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5
- For 5.0 scale: Percentage = CGPA × 20
For example, if your CGPA is 8.5 on a 10.0 scale:
Percentage = 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%

Percentage and percentile are different concepts:
- Percentage: Represents the proportion of marks obtained out of total marks. It's calculated as (Marks Obtained / Total Marks) × 100.
- Percentile: Represents the percentage of scores that fall below a particular score in a distribution. For example, if you're in the 90th percentile, you scored better than 90% of the test-takers.
Percentage is an absolute measure of performance, while percentile is a relative measure comparing your performance to others.
To calculate percentage increase or decrease:
Percentage Change = [(New Value - Old Value) / Old Value] × 100
For example, if your marks increased from 70 to 85:
Percentage Increase = [(85 - 70) / 70] × 100 = (15 / 70) × 100 = 21.43%
If your marks decreased from 85 to 70:
Percentage Decrease = [(70 - 85) / 85] × 100 = (-15 / 85) × 100 = -17.65%
Different educational systems use different grading methods:
- Percentage System: Direct calculation of percentage from marks
- CGPA System: Convert CGPA to percentage using the appropriate multiplier
- Grade Point System: Convert grade points to percentage based on your institution's conversion formula
- Letter Grade System: Each letter grade corresponds to a percentage range (e.g., A = 90-100%, B = 80-89%)
Always check with your specific educational institution for their official conversion formulas.
